Family Constellations: A Systemic Guide to Understanding Intergenerational Trauma and Attachment Patterns

This book offers a comprehensive guide to Family Constellations, a method within systemic therapy that explores the deep-seated forces shaping our lives. It provides readers with a structured understanding of the principles developed by Bert Hellinger, focusing on how intergenerational trauma and hidden loyalties influence present-day relationship dynamics and personal well-being.
The content is divided into four main parts. The first section lays the theoretical groundwork of systemic psychology, explaining Bert Hellinger’s phenomenological approach. You will learn about the foundational Orders of Love, including the principles of belonging, the balance of giving and taking, and the significance of hierarchy within a family system. The book also delves into the mechanisms of transgenerational entanglements, showing how we may unconsciously identify with the fates of our ancestors and carry unresolved trauma across generations.
The second part guides you through the practical preparation for a constellation. It covers how to clarify your personal intention, cultivate an open mindset, and manage expectations. You will find guidance on gathering relevant family information, such as creating a genogram to identify recurring patterns.
The third section provides insights into the process of a group workshop. It details the roles of the client, representatives, and facilitator, explaining how positioning and perceived emotions reveal underlying relationship dynamics. The book addresses specific applications, including constellations for couple conflicts and professional systems, and demonstrates how to identify hidden attachment patterns.
Finally, the fourth part focuses on integrating the experience into daily life. It discusses the importance of allowing the insights to settle and how to manage emotional after-effects. Readers will learn how to formulate and work with personal healing sentences and symbolic rituals to anchor the new perspectives. The guide concludes by exploring how these insights can lead to long-term changes in behavior and a conscious re-positioning within your own family system.
