Globalization Critique: Reshaping the Global Economic Order

This publication provides a detailed examination of criticism of globalization and the frameworks proposed for reshaping the current global economic order.
The book begins by exploring the foundations of the anti-globalization movement, analyzing its civil society mobilization techniques and the construction of transnational solidarity networks. It delves into approaches for moving beyond free trade dogma, discussing the principles of fair trade versus free trade, the development of protective mechanisms for local markets, and the integration of social minimum standards into trade agreements.
A central theme is the development of strategies to limit corporate influence. This includes a close look at instruments for accountability for corporate power, such as international liability rules. The text addresses the fight against tax havens through measures like mandatory transparency and a global minimum tax, alongside the sanctioning of non-cooperative jurisdictions. Furthermore, it examines methods to curb political lobbying by corporations.
Another focus is on shaping ethical and just economic relations. The book discusses the implementation of corporate responsibility within ethical supply chains through due diligence legislation and independent certification systems. It also covers the establishment of global labor rights, including strengthening trade union freedoms, enforcing occupational health and safety standards, and promoting living wage principles.
Finally, the publication outlines pathways toward a new global economic architecture. It presents concepts to reform the WTO, such as democratizing its decision-making and reorienting its dispute settlement mechanism toward sustainability goals. The analysis also considers the strategic use of deglobalization trends to foster regional economic activity and build resilience. The concluding sections lay out the building blocks for a sustainable form of globalization, including the regulation of international financial markets and the development of global cooperation mechanisms to address planetary challenges.
